A most common question on the web and among SEO (Search Engine Optimization) experts is - Whether placing two back links, with separate key phrases, from the same source page and pointing to the same target page, actually works on the Google search engine?

Starting from the end - Answer varies, according to the whom ever supplies the answer.

Here we will try to present the two main conceptions and their draw backs -

A. NO, this doesn't work

A quite good experiment was performed by
Branko Rihtman and can be found on the SEO Scientist blog. This experiment was well structured and shows, that when creating two separate back links using two different key phrases, from the same source page to a single target web page  - Google drops the 2nd key phrase and only relates to the 1st one. Thus, only the 1st key pharse will rank for the target web page.

What draw backs, does this experiment have:
  1. No repetion of experiment for different variables  - The experiment was conducted only once and thus we can't guarantee that there are no exception over time & for different variables (Web page & Key phrases).
  2. No web page history - Both source & target web pages (Or rather domains) we're used before (And at present) for other SEO purposes. Thus, it can't be guaranteed that Google was not effected by their past history.
  3. Web pages content & structure - All tough a general description is available, it is not clear whether different structure and \ or content, for both source & target web pages would have influenced the result.
B. Yes, Google will use both key phrases

 An experiment, performed by
Michael Martinez, that was conducted to debunk the earlier one and which showed clearly that both key phrases where adopted and ranked by Google. Full details can be found on the SEO Theory blog.

What are the draws back of this experiment:
  1. Source & Traget web page integrity - Both source & target web pages where used, where fully functioning and have already been ranked by Google. Both source & target web page integrity was compromised. Thus, its influence on the experiment results can't be calculated.
  2. Results on Google - As mentioned on the experiment page, search results where not stable. This is due to technical reasons that can't be controlled and most likely effect end results.
  3. Key phrase integrity - As a result of the experiment being far from controlled, both target & source web pages had their own Google history. Thus, influence on key phrase integrity can't be guaranteed.
To conclude - As both experiments achieved conflicting results and as both had a few draw backs, it is quite safe to determine that both a positive and a negative answer can't be over looked. It is quite obvious, from both experiments, that Google search results are effected by much more then a single factor and that both experiments didn't achieve absolute sterility. Thus, it will be safe to conclude that the effect on results of the Google search, after back linking two separate key phrases - From a single web page to a single target web page - are not conclusive.

Thus, it will be best to treat the back link tool (As well as most other SEO tools) a fluid and ever changing one. Always remember that according to Google themselves - The Google search algorithm keeps changing all the time!
